Russia's mission control said the Soyuz spacecraft carrying a three-man international crew docked on schedule at 0219 GMT on Sunday and the crew — Russian Sergei Krikalev, John Phillips of the United States and Italian Roberto Vittori — afterwards opened the hatch and entered the space station.
Mr Sergei Krikalev, and Mr Phillips, are scheduled to remain at the station for almost six months. Mr Vittori is scheduled to return to Kazakhstan on April 24 along with the current ISS crew, Russia's Salizhan Sharipov and American Leroy Chiao, who arrived at the orbiting station in October.
One of Krikalev and Phillips' key tasks during their six-month mission will be to observe the condition of the U.S. space shuttle Discovery when it arrives in the first shuttle launch since the Columbia shuttle disaster on Feb. 1, 2003. The two will conduct a photo survey of the Discovery's insulating tiles as the shuttle docks.
"We are very happy to see the new crew arrive and we wish them an excellent mission," Sharipov said over a video linkup with Russian Mission Control in Korolyov, outside Moscow.
