Rooney Mara, the star of David Fincher's Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Vogue Magazine November 2011
Rooney Mara, the star of David Fincher's upcoming Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, graces the cover of this month's Vogue with a profile by Contributing Editor Jonathan Van Meter.
The November issue hits newsstands nationwide October 25th, but the cover story is available now on Vogue.com:
It's approaching midnight, and the June sun is winking on the horizon, still hoping to conjure one last moment of spooky beauty for the good people of Stockholm. Rooney Mara, David Fincher, and I are walking home from a two-bottle-of-wine dinner at their favorite café, around the corner from Ingmar Bergman Plats. Both of them have been living in Sweden, on and off, since the previous summer, shooting one of the most anticipated movies in years: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. As we pass the Royal Dramatic Theatre, where Greta Garbo studied as a teenager, Mara points to the clock tower in Gamla Stan, silhouetted in the distance, and reminds Fincher that when it strikes twelve it will be exactly one year to the day since he first auditioned her to play the part of Lisbeth Salander, arguably the most coveted role for an actress since Scarlett O'Hara in Gone With the Wind (another film adaptation of a wildly popular book featuring a shrewd, complicated, difficult-to-love heroine capable of slaying a man).
"Really?" says Fincher. "A year ago tomorrow?" He shakes his head in disbelief and then fishes a vibrating phone out of his pocket: "Hello, Amy." It is the co-chairperson of Sony Pictures, Amy Pascal, the studio head who, if this movie takes off, will surely get credit for having greenlighted the first truly adult franchise to come out of Hollywood since the early seventies, when movies like The Exorcist--not Twilight--were winning the terrified hearts of audiences everywhere.
Michelle Williams graces the cover of Vogue's October issue, on newsstands nationwide September 20th.
On the occasion of her starring role in the upcoming film My Week with Marilyn, Contributing Editor Adam Green spends time with the actress to talk about movies, motherhood, and taking on the sexiest icon of all time. Photographed by Annie Leibovitz.
On not being as guarded during interviews: "I feel like something has changed for me, but it's a new change, so it's going to be hard for me to describe. Maybe it has something to do with turning 30. I don't feel as shy or nervous or self-conscious. I have more confidence that I can handle what life brings me. I don't feel scared to have an idea and express it. I feel giddy about it because it's a complete transformation. It's like I've found my voice."
On how daunting playing such an iconic figure was: "As soon as I finished the script [for My Week with Marilyn], I knew that I wanted to do it, and then I spent six months trying to talk myself out of it. But I always knew that I never really had a choice. I've started to believe that you get the piece of material that you were ready for."
On gaining weight to approximate Marilyn's curves: "Unfortunately, it went right to my face (puffs up cheeks to illustrate). So at some point it became a question of, Do I want my face to look like Marilyn Monroe's or my hips?" (She opted for the former and filled out the latter with foam padding.)
LEONARDO DICAPRIO FEATURED ON THE COVER OF THE OCTOBER ISSUE OF GQ
Leonardo DiCaprio has his pick of roles in Hollywood, but not much gets him excited these days. Sometimes years go by between his movies. So what accounts for his choosing to play the despicable and probably closeted FBI legend, J. Edgar Hoover? The film's director, Clint Eastwood. Mark Harris sits down with the two men--both legends in their own right--to find out why they're finally working together now and gets their thoughts on the current film industry: "Continuously trying to achieve box-office success is a dead end," says DiCaprio. "It goes where it's been before. Plagiarism is always the biggest thing in Hollywood," blasts Eastwood. They also weigh in on the recent barrage of comic-book movies, the public's obsession with box-office numbers, DiCaprio's directing aspirations--Eastwood says, "He'd be great"--and more.
Leonardo DiCaprio on his ambivalence towards box-office numbers:
"Throughout my career, I never knew which movies of mine made money and which didn't. When Titanic came out, people would say, 'Do you realize what a success this is?' And I'd say, 'Yeah, yeah, it's a hit.' The [money] stuff never mattered to me until I was into my thirties and got interested in producing, and people would show me charts explaining what finances a movie, what you'll make from foreign, what you'll make from domestic, what you need to make an R-rated film that's a comedy versus a drama. But even now I say that unless you want to prove that you can carry a film with your name, continuously trying to achieve box-office success is a dead end."
Eastwood and DiCaprio weigh in on the politics of gay marriage:
"These people who are making a big deal about gay marriage? I don't give a fuck about who wants to get married to anybody else! Why not?! We're making a big deal out of things we shouldn't be making a deal out of...Just give everybody the chance to have the life they want," says Clint Eastwood.
"That's the most infuriating thing--watching people focus on these things. Meanwhile, there's the onset of global warming and these incredibly scary and menacing things with the future of our economy," says DiCaprio.
The October issue is on newsstands nationwide September 20th, 2011

For one glorious, confusing moment, we -- and, we later learned, everyone in the rows around us -- thought this walking creamsicle had to be Donatella Versace. Kate talks about her childhood and nude scenes. JJ has the excerpts .
On her childhood: "I was extremely self sufficient. At the age of 9 I knew I wanted to be an actress. I had that sort of determination that that I can imagine in 9 or 10-year-old girl, for a parent, must have been fairly disconcerting ... I didn't know how on earth I was going to pull any of that off, but I was just sure of it."
On nude scenes: "I hate it! Listen, make no mistake, I just get on it. I just go in and say 'Oh f--' let's do it.' And boom. If you complain about it or procrastinate it's not going to go away. It's a profoundly bizarre thing to do ... You can literally be tangled in sheets, and you turn to the other actor and say 'What the f-- are we doing?' 'Dear Mum, at work today I had so-and-so's left nut sack pressed against my cheek.' It's sort of unethical if you think about it in those terms."

Justin also responded to the fact that Kanye West (whom the Biebs tells us is his style icon) recently wore a women's sweater: "It wasn't [so he'd] look like a woman in a sweater; it was just a regular sweater that happened to be a woman's."

Maybe he'll get a chance to wear girlfriend Selena Gomez's jeans? When Life & Style asked Justin if marriage is on the horizon, he said with a grin, "I don't know. I feel like if it happens, it happens. Right now I'm just focusing on my music, and I feel like it's going pretty well. I definitely believe in marriage -- but not any time soon." He added that cohabitation with Selena will come "after marriage."

"We're Next, so we really gear girls toward high fashion, like Jill Sander and Dolce & Gabbana, and that's where we're headed with Aliana. We're also going for endorsement deals for her, and there might be some partnerships with designers, so she can help design, which is happening with a lot of models right now. Aliana loves and understands fashion."

"It's weird. Two complete extremes. I'm not some crazy lady who's gone off the deep end, because I definitely haven't. I just always try to be real. Every 18 year old explores sexuality and experiments and tries things. For me there's no reason to change that. You have to be true to yourself."

Miley Cyrus was "so bored" portraying Hannah Montana
Miley Cyrus has revealed she was "so bored" portraying Disney sweetheart Hannah Montana . She tells Prestige magazine, "I miss the family vibe, but I don't miss the routine at all. I was so bored doing the same thing every day. It's a lot easier, not being on a show, to live my life a little bit and do some of the other thing that I want to do. I don't have to be back at a certain time. You're not worrying about a cast schedule or what the producers are going to think."
"My little sister, who's 11, wants to go into acting. I just say, 'Just wait, dude, because the way you're going to be when you're my age and the way you are right now are so different. Don't put yourself in a situation where people are going to think of you as only one thing. You're going to change a lot. It interferes with your growing up if you're not strong enough and you're not sure who you want to be.' "I'm glad I'm not a character anymore and able to be me."

Ian Somerhalder brings his own life experiences to his performances. "There is the edge, in keeping it fresh and keeping things in my life that I can actually put into the text," says Ian. "The only way I'm going to be able to really, truly live a moment is if it actually means something to me. You can't just show up and say the words. Sometimes it really hurts. A lot of stuff that my character goes through is super-cathartic for me, as an individual, and it's not always pretty. You're pulling from all these things in your life that are not necessarily good. It's basically like getting paid for therapy. Instead of laying on someone's couch and telling them about how you feel, you're internally pulling all this stuff."
O, The Oprah Magazine: Rosie O'Donnell on Her Next Chapter
Rosie O'Donnell joins Oprah on the October cover of O, The Oprah Magazine; the latest issue - themed BREAKTHROUGHS - hits newsstands on Tuesday, September 13th. Oprah interviewed Rosie for the in-book feature where the devoted mother of four opens up to O readers about parenting, fame and the next chapter in her life - moving from NY to Chicago in preparation for her return to TV with the debut of "The Rosie Show" on OWN this October.
Devoted mother of four:
ROSIE: "...I was always comfortable around kids and always wanted a family of my own."
ROSIE: "I would die for any of my children, and, more importantly, I would live for any of them."
On fame:
ROSIE: "The problem is, fame is held up as the brass ring, the place you want to get to...But I'm telling you, you're missing the real moments of your life while craving this thing that doesn't allow you to have them anymore."
Rosie's return to TV:
OPRAH: "In 25 years of doing my show only one competitor ever seriously challenged me in the ratings: Rosie O' Donnell. From the day Rosie took her place among the crowded field of talk show hosts, I knew she had the 'It' thing."
ROSIE: "I was actually on the verge of signing a new deal with NBC, and--this probably sounds kiss-assy, but it's true--just before I was about to sign, I remember saying to my agent, 'Doesn't Oprah have her own channel? Can we call there?' If I was going back to entertaining, I wanted to work with you."
Transition to Chicago:
ROSIE: "I'm feeling rejuvenated. I'm nervous about starting the show, which is the greatest way to be. When you don't have that anticipation of wanting to do well, then you might as well not be doing it at all."
Jillian Michaels stars on REDBOOK's October cover, on newsstands September 13th. In the interview, the newest host of The Doctors, opens up about her decision to leave her hit show The Biggest Loser after 11 seasons and her ongoing adoption of a baby from the Democratic Republic of Congo.
Photo credit: Sheryl Nields for REDBOOK). Pick up the October issue of REDBOOK, on newsstands September 13th.
On the two years it's taken to adopt a baby from the Democratic Republic of the Congo:
I've watched friends congratulate me on [starting] the process, get pregnant themselves, have a baby, and then their baby's crawling. People are lapping me. My best friend just told me she's pregnant, and of course I'm ecstatic, but I'm also like, Uhhh! [gestures stabbing herself]. Like, I want my kid to be playing with your kids! It's just a nightmare.
On How she decided to leave The Biggest Loser:
I've wanted to be in daytime television for a long time, because that's where you can convey a message. On prime time, it's like Jersey Shore and The Desperate Housewives of Some Dumb-ass County. It's just train-wreck television. And it rates. [On The Biggest Loser] I would have long conversations with contestants about unearthing stuff from their past, and none of it would air. They grunt, they cry, I'm like, "You can do it," they say, "I believe in myself," and the scene's over.
On whether she tried having a child naturally:
Turns out I had PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). But at a young age, I didn't know if I wanted kids, so I didn't really care. Then I got older, and I watched friends go through IVF, with years of hormones and devastation and disappointment, and I remember thinking God wants something different for me. If I choose to pursue this path, I'll adopt. And when I was finally ready to go for it, I thought, This is going to be so easy. I am such an a--hole. I had nooo idea. I mean you're just waiting...If it's not done by this November, I'm going to take my shot with foster care.
On advice to women on facing their fear of change:
They have to trust. I can't tell you how many people tried to talk me out of leaving [The Biggest Loser]. Everyone. People are really fear-based, and many have this monkey-bar approach to life, like you can't leave one spot until you're holding on to the next monkey bar. But by going straight to the next thing, you never get time to reflect or to create space for what's right.
Joe Jonas and Taylor Swift are back in contact, multiple sources tell the new Us Weekly, out now -- and Jonas, 22, is eager to restart the romance he ended with a 27-second phone call in late 2008.
"He wants her back," a Jonas source tells Us. "He wants to show her he's a changed man and would love to see what's possible between them."
To that end, Jonas and Swift are "testing the waters" as platonic pals for now. Jonas was even a surprise audience member at Swift's sold-out Sept. 1 concert in San Jose, Calif.
Post-split, Jonas and Swift, 21, infamously traded barbs about one another via song. Swift rehashed the breakup in "Forever and Always" and trashed his rebound, Camilla Belle, in "Better Than Revenge." Jonas ranted about "superstars and all the tears on her guitar" in his track "Much Better."
But those bitter musical sentiments are water under the bridge now, pals say.
"They're putting their past behind them," a Swift source explains. "And maybe rekindling an old flame."
For much more details on this unexpected love rematch -- how Taylor's responded so far, how she invited him to her concert and more -- pick up the new Us Weekly, on stands Friday.
Ellen DeGeneres Good Housekeeping October 2011 Cover
Ellen DeGeneres graces Good Housekeeping's October 2011 cover, on newsstands September 13, and in the interview, the TV star and author talks about her tough childhood, the choice she made that unlocked her joy, and where you'll find her on weekends.
On the accomplishment she is most proud of: "I'm glad I'm funny. I'm glad I make people happy, because that's very important. But I'm proud to be known as a kind person."
On comedy as a source of comfort, after a tough childhood: "I was quiet as a kid and wasn't funny until I was a little older. Then I remember being funny, because I remember people laughing. But I was more of the sensitive type, taking care of injured animals I found. But I was aware of all the stuff nobody in my family was talking about. Everything was fine all the time. I was like, Really? It doesn't seem like it. I watch people's behavior and notice things. I think that's why I became a comedian."
On her relationship with her mother: "My mom had some really bad things happen in her life, and she's a trouper. She's tougher than I am, I'd say. When my parents divorced, it was my mother and me, by ourselves in an apartment. At that point, we kind of became roommates. I was 13 years old. She'd been married for almost 20 years, and I watched her go through a tough time, trying to date, trying to figure things out. She dated some horrible men whom I had to kick out of the house. So, at 13, I kind of became an adult and was taking care of...watching her struggle. It made me go, Oh, you're my mom, but you're just a human being. I saw her in a different role all of a sudden."
On her positive attitude: "Well, I'm definitely happier than I've ever been. I assume tomorrow I'll be happier than today, because things are great. I have a great career and I have wonderful fans who really are supportive and loyal--because I'm not hiding anything from them. So, on the spectrum of happiness, I'm pretty high up there."
On Saturday, Ryan Gosling and Eva Mendes hit Disneyland in Anaheim, Calif., where they held hands and kissed, as exclusive Us Weekly photos show.
"They were very playful," an observer tells Us. "Eva was skipping around like a little girl...She would lean into him and she held his arm the entire time."
"She fed him," the onlooker says.
"It hasn't been a secret how excited Eva's been to film with him, and she's always joked with us about how gorgeous he is," the source adds. "She's never been shy about having the hots for him!"
Lady Gaga graces Harper's Bazaar's October 2011 cover
Lady Gaga graces Harper's Bazaar's October cover, posing basically barefaced and showing that her iconic look comes naturally.
She confesses, "Whether I'm wearing lots of makeup or no makeup, I'm always the same person inside."
"I think what has been lovely about my relationship with the public is that they expect something unexpected from me."
On her body image: "I'm very free-spirited," she says. "Even when I was a kid, I used to run around naked with the babysitter, driving her crazy." She attributes her body confidence to dancing, and "I do yoga, I do Bikram and I run, and I eat really healthy. You know, my work sort of feeds me. I keep in shape by working hard."
On spending time on her own, due to her travel schedule: "When you're alone as much as I am," she observes, "you become accustomed to your solitude and embrace it."
On taking up surfing, which she tried for the first time on a two-day vacation to Mexico in August: "I fell off a lot in the beginning," she says, "but one of the surfers said to me, 'Now that you can stand up, just look into the future and enjoy the ride.' I thought that was an interesting metaphor about life."

Adele is the cover girl for the October 2011 issue of Vogue UK.
The Mail has some excerpts from Adele's interview:
While many young singers are obsessed with staying slim there is one star that makes no apology for her fuller figure. And in a revealing interview singing sensation Adele says she is happy just the way she is and her voluptuous shape has never been an issue.
Speaking to Vogue the 23-year-old who also posed for a series of stunning portraits said: 'I enjoy being me; I always have done. I've seen people where it rules their lives, you know, who want to be thinner or have bigger boobs, and how it wears them down. And I just don't want that in my life.'
And it seems the people she surrounds herself with ensure she maintains a positive self-image.
She explained: 'It's just never been an issue - at least, I've never hung out with the sort of horrible people who make it an issue. I have insecurities of course, but I don't hang out with anyone who points them out to me.'
Adele, who was forced to cancel the first two dates of her U.K. tour yesterday because of a severe cold and chest infection, has also revealed why you won't see her as the face of a brand anytime soon, no matter how high the offer is.
She told the magazine: 'I don't want to see me plastered everywhere,' before adding, 'If they offered me £10million, I'd be like f*** off. Besides if I was going to be the face of anything it should be the face of full-fat coke.'

"I had to make a lifestyle change to get in to that suit," says Anne. "Even brown rice is too exotic! I am working out. My stunt double Maxine has really been getting me on my protein and lots of other things. But I am a vegetarian and at the moment I feel like I am living on kale and green vegetables (laughs). But catsuits are unforgiving. It takes a lot of motivation to get in to one."
"I have decided I am going to go on a bit of a binge afterwards. I sit there and do bicep curls and all I can say is 'Cake! Chardonnay! Spray tans!"

On how old he was when he had his first kiss:
"It was sometime in junior high. I don't remember what year, but it was definitely in junior high. I think it was just with a random girl from school. I mean, it's not like I walked up to her and was like 'You're just a random girl and I'm going to kiss you,' but just a girl from school, and we had a little thing in junior high."
On his TV guilty pleasure:
"One thing I watch off the hook because it's on every single night up here [in Vancouver] and I usually can't find it in the States that much is Dog: The Bounty Hunter."
On his worst habit:
"I bounce my knees, but I do not have restless leg syndrome. I did an interview, I don't even know who it was with, and they said I told them I have restless leg syndrome and it distracts me from my work. I do not have any syndrome. I actually have many friends [like me] who just bounce their knees."
On whether or not it's easy for him to talk to girls:
"[Laughs] Oh, I definitely wouldn't say I overcame that. I guess it just depends on the girl. Sometimes I'll feel free to completely open up, and I wish I could do that more often because that's what I look for in a girl. Someone that can open up and be herself, but no, I definitely haven't overcome it completely."
On what's a relationship deal breaker for him:
"If a girl doesn't know how to smile or laugh or if they try to play cool all the time. Playing hard to get is not the way to win me over. I'm definitely more for the girl who can smile and laugh all the time and just have a good time!"

On her first job:
As an extra on my dad's (actor John Aniston) soap opera, Search For Tomorrow. When I was 12, I asked him if I could get a part on his show. I wore a yellow skating outfit, and I was kind of large. It's hard to look good in yellow, and I certainly did not. I remember I got a check for about $100, and I was blown away. Later, I waited a lot of tables, and I wasn't very good at that. I dropped more than one burger in customers' laps, and you just do not want all of that Swiss cheese and mushrooms in your pants. I wasn't a good waitress, but I was told that I was very nice and charming, so people liked me anyway.
On what she spent her first big paycheck on:
A vintage Mercedes. I was struggling a little bit in New York, working as a waitress at Jackson Hole [Mountain Resort in Wyoming], but not really getting any consistent acting work. Then, I moved out here to Los Angeles, and I started getting pilots and working pretty regularly. I still didn't make any decent money until I got on Friends. Practically every day for about a year, I'd drive by this beautiful car that was parked on Melrose [Avenue] with a "for sale" sign in it. It was a beautiful little vintage Mercedes 280SL. I had it fixed up, but it never worked. It was a lemon. Now I know why it was on the street for so long! I may have driven it three times, but I held on to it forever. It really represented something to me.
On what she'd be if she wasn't an actress:
Maybe an interior designer. I love seeing a house and thinking about how it should be redone or restored. I spent a lot of time doing my current house, and it's beautiful. It's like a beautiful work of art and I'm very proud of it. But I recently realized that I'm into cozier spaces. My house is too big. I love to entertain there, but most of the time the house is empty. I just live in one room, and I don't need all of the space. Now, I get to do that fun part again and look for a new one.
On having a blast playing a horrible boss:
I had a fantastic time playing one. Honestly, the character is so absurd. I'd never done anything like this part. It was degrading and uncomfortable for Charlie, and it was really fun for me! Right now, I'm directing a short film with Patricia Clarkson and Tony Shalhoub for Project Five, an anthology of short films about breast cancer. I'm trying to be a good boss; to have a good temper; know what I'm doing; and have everything in order. I think it's just about creating a positive environment. If you're going to kill 'em, you've got to kill 'em with kindness.

KIM Kardashian's new husband, Kris Humphries, is upset about the renewed interest in Kim's sextape with R 'n' B singer Ray J.

SARAH Jessica Parker talks about her marriage to Matthew Broderick and thecompromises to make it work.
"It's all about compromises. You can hate somebody for 20 minutes or two days, but it's still a treat to be in a relationship, if that's the person you want to be with. After a while, a compromise kind of gets marginalized anyway. You don't recall them, it's just what you do to make things work," she said.
"Lots of marriages work for many strange and wonderful reasons, and my reasons can't be anybody else's."
JUSTIN TIMBERLAKE: "I'M NOT TRYING TO BECOME A SERIOUS ACTOR YOU F---ERS"
Justin Timberlake put on a free concert with FreeSol at Irving Plaza in NYC for 901 Tequila on September 1 - and he had a message for all of the critics:
"For the record I'm not trying to become a serious actor you f---ers."
"The Social Network" star -- casual in jeans and a cream & black shirt -- came right out with the group FreeSol, an eyewitness tells Life & Style. "He began playing the keyboard as if he was just part of their band," the eyewitness says. "He was dancing and singing some backup and he knew all the words to their songs, but purposefully stayed in the background and let Freesol have the spotlight."
"And at one point during the set he sat on the floor behind his keyboard and chugged a beer," the eyewitness tells Life & Style.
Justin, who recently starred in "Friends With Benefits" and "Bad Teacher," then screamed out: "I wanted to take the opportunity to show you a real band and real music. But I want to sing some songs for you too."
First up Justin played "Cry Me a River" and then fan-favorite "Like I Love You." "He stopped for a second, claiming, 'I'm too old to sing this song,' but he laughed and kept going anyway," the eyewitness says.
