| Jackson Molestation Case |
|
|
 |
After more than an hour's wait, Jackson and his attorney stood and faced the first group of prospective jurors filing into the courtroom in his child-molestation trial today.
Superior Court Judge Rodney Melville summoned 300 people today as jury selection begins for Michael Jackson's child molestation case.
Another 300 are set to appear Tuesday, and a final 150 on Wednesday. From that pool the judge hopes to find 12 jurors and 12 alternates. Jackson, 46, is charged with molesting a cancer patient then age 13, now 15 after plying him with alcohol.
Jackson on Sunday released a videotaped statement saying that leaks to the media about grand jury testimony in the case contained information that was "disgusting and false" and predicted victory at trial.

As W declares victory in the Iraqi election, in which most of the Sunnis, and all active insurgents refused to vote, it takes some stretch of the imagination to see that the election will result in a stable government. The body count is not complete; so far what is known is that insurgents struck polling stations with a string of suicide bombings and mortar volleys; at least 44 Iraqis died and there are known casualties among American and British troops.

Spurred on by the popular conception that because she has a reputation as a hard-partying chick, she is like Paris Hilton, Lindsay Lohan, currently filming the romantic comedy "Just My Luck" in New Orleans, is taking the advice of an acting coach who told her to watch Grace Kelly and Bette Davis movies and to start behaving more like the grandes dames of cinema. Watch out, Katherine Hepburne, Lindsay is angling to out-class you, and The Bosh, of course, has no doubt that she will succeed. (By Scott Rose)

Polls have closed and ballot counting has begun at about 5,300 polling after Iraq's first free election in a half century, officials are reporting a higher than expected turnout of registered voters amid attacks and threats of violence. An estimated 8 million Iraqis voted today for a National Assembly and carried out what is touted as Success in the country's first democratic election since 1953. CNN reports Insurgents carried out more than a dozen attacks across the country on Sunday, killing at least 25 people and wounding 71 others. A final result of the elections is expected in at least 10 days. Today's polls will elect a 275-member National Assembly and 18 provincial legislatures. The assembly will draw up Iraq's new Constitution and select a President and his two deputies, who in turn will name a new Prime Minister and a Cabinet to serve for 11 months until fresh elections are held.
