Mission: Impossible III’s mildly disappointing box office take suggests that Cruise may yet escape the purgatory that results from a “celebrity disowning.�? Others have not managed to escape their fate. All of the following celebrities were riding a wave of success when, within a short period of time, the public withdrew their approval. These disownings weren't snap reactions to scandals or career missteps -- they have persisted, thus far, and will require a major turnaround to win back the public's love. We didn't include flashes in the pan (Pee Wee Herman), or those who lost favor that was quickly regained (Hugh Grant).
