If they weren't in white, Golden Globes attendees were true blue. There were a great deal of actresses in the shade like Helen Mirren in a teal Donna Karan, Eva Longoria in navy Emanuel Ungaro, Isla Fisher of Wedding Crashers also in navy, America Ferrera of "Ugly Betty" in an indigo Brian Reyes, and Edie Falco, Geena Davis, Naomi Watts (in Gucci) and Toni Colette in rich sky blues.
Luckily there were some women brave enough to rock the red carpet in some bold hues. Those daring few were "Grey's Anatomy's" Sara Ramirez in ruby red BCBG, Felecity Huffman in an emerald gown, Vanessa Minillo in orange, Sheryl Crow in purple Elie Saab, Julia Louis-Dreyfuss in a pumpkin Carolina Herrera, Maria Menounos and Renee Zellweger in green Dior, Reese Witherspoon in a yellow Nina Ricci, Rachel Weisz in a red Bill Blass, Jada Pinkett-Smith in a coral Armani Prive, and Mary J. Blige in red Reem Acra.
But enough rehashing. The fun part is rating the gowns. Looking gorgeous in her navy Ungaro with turquoise bejeweled straps and bodice was Eva Longoria. Her fitted ruched dress had a sweetheart neckline and a surprise cut out in back. America Ferrera benefited from her friendship with designer Brian Reyes. His custom indigo gown for her proved that while her character may be called Ugly Betty, America is anything but. Angelina Jolie was as cool as a cucumber when she walked the red carpet with Brad Pitt, ignoring or deflecting almost every question she was asked. But you could forgive her since she looked so amazing in her gray St. John dress with matching shawl. It swept the ground and swept many off their feet.
Special honors go to the next three women. Helen Mirren should be recognized for achievement in looking hot at age 61. Her Donna Karan gown had a plunging neckline that she pulled off like only a true dame could. Rachel Weisz stunned in a red Bill Blass gown, making her our pick for best post-baby body. When she won the Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress last year, Rachel was as big as a house awaiting the birth of her son Henry. Less than eight months after he was born she was sexier (and slimmer) than ever. And finally Reese Witherspoon, in a bright yellow Nina Ricci mini-dress sure showed that separating from Ryan Phillippe hasn't hurt her looks. She looked sleek and sophisticated, throwing in an unexpected pair or red shoes, a detail which really pulled her look together.
Unfortunately our pick for worst dressed didn't manage to wow us with how well she's dealing with her break up. Cameron Diaz brought back memories of Bjork's infamous swan dress in her frilly Valentino gown. The dress could have been an avant garde gem had it done away with the single tulle shoulder strap or the black bejeweled bow at the waist. Together with Cameron's red lipstick, these details added up to overkill.
Our next pick for worst dressed made us shed a few tears. Cate Blanchett's black lace Alexander McQueen was a train wreck. Cate usually manages to walk the fine line between outstanding and outrageous, but she crossed it with this one. The off-the-shoulder lace bodice top was nice, but it all went wrong at the waist when the gown poufed out Marie Antoinette style and then ended in an asymmetrical mess. Add in the flowered Roger Vivier heels and the hairdo she must have done herself in the limo and Blanchett bombs.
Poor Evangeline Lilly. She wore a lavender and yellow strapless Versace. Unless you're an L.A. Laker, it's a bad idea to mix purple and yellow. Evangeline is a beautiful girl and her hair looked wonderful, but this color combination took her complexion and basically barfed on it.
The final three women made it onto the worst-dressed list because of the details: accessories, hair, etc. Though her character Wilhelmina Slater on Ugly Betty is known for her fashion sense, Vanessa Williams was a definite fashion victim at the Globes. She arrived wearing an over-the-top fur shrug, which took away from the lovely brown Carmen Marc Valvo gown she wore. Also subtracting from her pretty potential was the poodle she had apparently strapped to her head. Though she should have donned one of the sleek buns Wilhelmina favors, Vanessa decided that big, curly, frou-frou hair was the way to go. She was wrong.
Heidi Klum, who is known as "the body," sure wasn't showing off her shape at the Globes. She instead wore a billowy Givenchy gown. That's fine, she had a baby not too long ago.; maybe the body isn't ready for primetime yet. But what was inexcusable were Heidi's accessories: long white gloves and a heart choker that was as tacky as her Christmas song, "Wonderland." If she had worn that get up on "Project Runway," she'd have gotten the Auf Wiedersehen.
And finally there's Jennifer Love Hewitt, whose golden brown Georges Chakra number looked more fitted for the prom than the Golden Globes. It had a princessy ball gown shape to it and a big ugly bow at the waistline. Then there was her hair, let's just say it was a little too beauty pageant for us.
And there you have it. Golden Globes 2007. Let's hope the Oscars next month bring just as many disasters.
