YouTube has announced that it is changing its monetization rules for Creators, meaning that it will be even harder for small publishers to make money from Youtube for the content that they create.
new channels will need to have 1,000 subscribers and 4,000 hours of watch time within the past 12 months to be eligible for ads. We will begin enforcing these new requirements for existing channels in YPP beginning February 20th, 2018.
Furthermore if a creator receives “three community guideline strikes” Google will remove the users’ accounts and channels from YouTube. In recent months Google has been heavily criticized for censoring and penalizing youtube channels for no good reason on youtube. For example Youtube has been taking down Christian channels and videos for no other reason other than the youtubers faith. Even super popular Youtuber pewdiepie was penalized by google for his right wing views.Without ad revenue many small youtubers will have to stop making videos and their opinions and views will be silenced.
It is therefore evident that these new rules are simply an affront to freedom of speech and will further enable Google to censor/penalize YouTubers solely if they have opinions Google does not like even more.
This is not the first time that Google has chosen to punish the small guys! In recent years google has been on a relentless so called “spam fighting” campaign releasing algorithms code named panda and penguin that have demoted/crushed many small business websites in its search results forcing them to buy adwords just to be seen.
Currently petitions are being set up on change.org to try to stop youtube from making these changes, however these petitions are very unlikely to make Google change its mind.
The only way to stop google from beating down small publishers and businesses is to boycott all of Googles products and to use alternatives.
