Cruise explained how he had chosen the Eiffel Tower.
"Yes, I proposed to Kate last night ... because it is very beautiful and romantic here," Cruise said.
Tom, who did not get down on one knee, revealed that he would like to get married at the Eiffel Tower surrounded by his and Katie's families. "The families are very excited," Tom said. "We've gotten so many warm congratulations. They love Katie, how could they not love Katie?
Smiling and exchanging glances with Holmes, who was sitting in the audience, he added: "I haven't slept all night. It's very exciting and very beautiful."
"So happy," Holmes said, when asked how she was feeling. She was sporting a large engagement ring.
Both stars have big summer films coming out, which had led to some speculation that this was all just a big publicity stunt.

Katie Holmes may have fallen for it, but Radar Magazine hears that Tom Cruise's seduction technique scared Scarlett Johansson. After striking out with Johansson, Cruise reportedly turned his attentions to 24-year-old Jessica Alba, 22-year-old Kate Bosworth, and 18-year-old Lindsay Lohan, before settling on the 26-year-old Holmes reports Radar Magazine.
