The Left wing Austrian president Alexander Van der Bellen, has said that all women should wear headscarves in “solidarity” to stop rampant Islamophobia.
“And it is not only Muslim women, all women can wear a headscarf, and if this real and rampant Islamaphobia continues, there will come a day where we must ask all women to wear a headscarf – all – out of solidarity to those who do it for religious reasons.”
His comments were made in march after a school girls questioned him about a ban on headscarves but have only now just surfaced after being finally broadcast on Austrian television.
Not everyone agrees with him as his remarks have sparked anger from all sides both left and right who see the headscarf as nothing more than a symbol of restraint to women’s freedom and making women nothing more than “shadows”.
Alexander Van der Bellen views are currently at odds with Austria’s current stance on headscarves and burqas. Alexander Van der Bellen left wing party is in a collation government with the centrist Social Democratic Party and the right wing Freedom Party of Austria whom are currently pushing for policies to ban the niqab and burqa in public. Since the government plans were exposed thousands of protesters took to the streets in protest against the proposed ban.
The government has also agreed to ban police officers, judges, magistrates and public prosecutors from wearing headscarves and niqab’s and burqa’s so that they appear more ideologically and religiously neutral (even if they are not).
In other news a viral video exposing the sheer abhorrent attitude of men towards young women wearing burqa’s in Saudi Arabia which shows a man herding women like cattle with a stick is removed by youtube (for no reason).
