White smoke spotted : a new pope in Rome

White smoke has been spotted on the Sistine Chapelle. It means there is a new Pope in Rome.

Who could be the 265th successor of St. Peter ?

The favorite candidate is Cardinal Angelo Bagnasco, who is the archbishop of the Italian port of Genoa. Cardinal Bagnasco was born in a small town in northern Italy, and he has said his desire to become a priest emerged at elementary school. In 1966 he was ordained in Genoa at age 23. He was ordained bishop in 1998. In 2007, he was elevated to cardinal by Pope Benedict XVI and that same year he was appointed to head the Italian Bishops' Conference, which is very influential among the country's politicians.

A possible challenger could be Cardinal John Olorunfemi Onaiyekan, only cardinal from Africa who is in the Race. Like other African leaders in the Catholic Church, Cardinal Onaiyekan has staked out conservative ground on social issues. He has condemned legislation that would safeguard same-sex marriage, for example, saying the marital bond can be only between a man and woman.
