How weird he is: “There was a time when I was out of work and really depressed and I’d stay up all night, and it was very possible that a girl would catch me playing with my puppets at four in the morning. It might seem fine lately…but when you’re unemployed and depressed and drunk, it seems real weird.”

His mother’s reaction to his nude scene: “Her lips started to quiver a little bit. She got up and left the theater, and when she came back, she had clearly been crying. I thought it would be a funny joke not to tell her beforehand that I’d done full-frontal nudity. Apparently it wasn’t.”

Dating faux-pas: I once had a breakup, and I woke up the next morning feeling panicked that I hadn’t said everything I needed to say. I drove to her house and waited hours for her to come out, and when she did, said, “I’ve had a lot of time to think about what I want to say to you. I know you want to leave me….” And then I went on to speak-sing “Ain’t Too Proud to Beg” from beginning to end while she blankly stared.
