What a difference a real designer makes. It's bad enough when your mom makes you wear a dress she made to school, or God forbid, to the prom. Can you imagine your mother making you wear one of her dresses to the Oscars?
Today's Fashion Good News, Bad News is brought to you by House of Dereon, who have proven that no amount of money can buy taste or style. Beyonce wore one of her mother's creations to the Academy Awards, and it stuck out like a sore thumb. You can't pretend couture; either you've got it or you don't.
On the other end of the fashion spectrum but in the same color group was Halle Berry's Marchesa gown. Also black and gold. Beautifully cut and elegantly draping Halle's incredible body, it had all the elements of a well-designed gown. It did not look like it came off the rack. I also give Halle (or her stylist) a lot of credit: at an event where over the top cleavage was prominent, Halle kept hers discreetly covered. There's a time and a place for everything, people.
