Teen Vogue March 2009 --Taylor Swift and Ed Westwick

In the ninth grade, when most girls are trying out for school sports teams, studying for tests or picking out homecoming dresses, Taylor Swift was signing her first songwriting deal. After seeing a television special on Faith Hill and her emergence into the Nashville music scene, Taylor was inspired to head to the home of country music and make her mark. She describes her foray into the business: “for spring break we rented a car and drove up and down Music Row, handing my homemade demo CD to receptionists at all the labels.”

At home in Pennsylvania, Taylor says the “kids at school thought it was weird that I liked country—they’d make fun of me…Jr. High was kind of hard because I got dumped by this group of popular girls.” But Taylor persevered and not long after her first visit to Nashville, she returned, but this time permanently and with a songwriting deal in hand.

Taylor’s candidness—in person and in her lyrics—is part of her charm; the nineteen year old is quick to tell you that she’s “typically single” and notes ironically that, “It’s weird—I thought I’d have so many more friends, but I feel like I’m less popular than I’ve ever been.” With the same soupcon of self-deprecation, she continues “I’m the girl who—I call it girl-next-door-itis—the hot guy is friends with and gets all his relationship advice from but never considers dating.”

Despite all of her success—which includes a role in the upcoming Hannah Montana movie and the attention of top designers who are vying to dress her—Taylor may be her own harshest critic. She aspires to wear Oscar de la Renta and is “obsessed with high heels.” With her meteoric ascent from regular girl to teen music sensation, Taylor is likely to have ample opportunity to wear more high heels than she could ever dream of.
