Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway tied for the Best Actress prize at the 14th
Annual Critics' Choice Awards.
Meryl was honoured for her role as a 1960s nun in new movie ‘Doubt’, while
Anne wowed the 200 American and Canadian movie critics who voted for the
awards with her performance in emotional drama ‘Rachel Getting Married’.
After receiving her accolade, Anne said: “Meryl is my idol. To win with my
idol who I was nominated against is amazing. I’m so thrilled for her and I’m
very thrilled for myself, too.”
Other winners at the ceremony – held in the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium –
included Sean Penn, who was crowed Best Actor for his role in political
drama ‘Milk’ as well as being honoured as part of the Best Acting Ensemble
prize for the movie.
Late actor Heath Ledger, who died last January of an accidental prescription
drugs overdose, made history after becoming the first star to receive a
posthumous award at the event – the Best Supporting Actor honour for his
role as The Joker in ‘The Dark Knight’.
'Slumdog Millionaire' triumphed in the Best Picture category.
‘The Reader’ star Kate Winslet was named Best Supporting Actress, while ‘The
Hoax’ actor Richard Gere was given the Joel Siegel Award for his extensive
