Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy talk about how they got engaged

“Dancing with the Stars” professional dancers Karina Smirnoff and Maksim Chmerkovskiy talk to Michael Yo about how they got engaged .

The two dancers dated for four months before becoming engaged. When asked when he knew he wanted to propose, Chmerkovskiy says: “When we started rehearsals for the tour. I've never thought of proposing to anybody before. For me it was like never (a) big deal until that second.”

Smirnoff says she was freaked out by the proposal: “I actually freaked out. I opened the box up and saw the ring. I closed it thinking ‘oh shoot something is going to happen,’ but he wasn't saying anything. Like Maksim was sitting on the bed being completely silent.”

Chmerkovskiy says: “Nothing came out until she took the ring out box, walked up to me. What followed was such discombobulated rant.”

A happy Smirnoff says the delivery wasn’t exactly perfect: “Somewhere in the middle he says ‘I've been with a lot of women.’ I was like ‘did he really just say that?’ The whole thing was supposed to be a quick short sentence, straight to the point and you know the knee and the whole thing. The knee never happened. There was no knee.”

Chmerkovskiy doesn’t recommend the fly-by-the-seat-of-your-pants approach to proposing: “My recommendation to all the guys out there: Write it down and practice cause if something happens it's just going to fly right out of your head.”
