RACHEL BILSON Teen Vogue - November 2008
“I can remember being a child dressing up. When I was two years old, my mom and my dad would pull things out of my closet and ask me, ‘Do you want to wear this? Do you want to wear this?’ I would say no to absolutely everything until they let me just put on whatever I wanted.” Even at an early age, Rachel Bilson had an opinion about her own sense of style. That keen awareness developed into a love of fashion – a world that she knows inside and out. Rachel can tell a Zac Posen from an Alexander Wang from a Brian Reyes from a mile away. And whether she is out on the town with her rescue mutt, or walking the red carpet with boyfriend Hayden Christensen at the Met Gala, Rachel has a knack for always looking paparazzi-ready. This fall, her passion for fashion took a new turn as she debuted a clothing line of her own with DKNY Jeans called Edie Rose.
Rachel’s collection was named for Edie, her maternal grandmother and Rose, rumor has it, for Hayden’s. “Two people who are very important to me,” is all the private star will say on the subject. While Rachel admits that she’s “not very good at sketching”, she was able to draw inspiration for the line from her own vast collection of vintage clothing while tapping into her mom’s eclectic taste. “I was always into vintage, even when I was younger. My mom is also a big vintage person, so she would take me shopping at all of her favorite stores. She has a really individual sense of style, so that was definitely an influence for me.” Rachel’s experience taking in countless fashion shows has also been a motivator for the young designer, “Watching everyone bring their beautiful ideas to life is an amazing experience. I love that thrill of seeing the clothes in person as they go down the runway. I just love it.”
Rachel’s effortless look was a natural fit for the collaboration with DKNY Jeans. “She has a great style,” says Donna Karan of her decision to approach the Young Hollywood tastemaker about doing a capsule collection. “It’s eclectic, a bit edgy and has that just-thrown-together look that feels young and spirited. She knows what works on her, always looks amazing and never looks like she worked at it.” Rachel describes her signature sense of style with the same ease, “I don’t think a lot about what I’m going to wear. I always say that I’m a messy dresser. Things are just sort of just thrown together. I’ll definitely change a few times, because it’s sort of like a work in progress,” she says, “but I love the process.”
Edie Rose for DKNY debuted in September at department stores including Macy’s, Lord & Taylor and Nordstrom. Catch Rachel in I Love You, New York starring opposite real-life love interest Hayden Christensen in 2009.
