I'm not a big basketball fan. I've always blamed that on the fact that I'm only 5'2", but it never held much of a charm for me. But basketball was Isiah Thomas' lifeblood. He lived and breathed hoops. And from what I understand, he played the game quite well. Unfortunately, off the court he was a dud.
Appointed president and head coach of the New York Knicks, Thomas led his team into four years of absolute misery. They couldn't win their way out of a wet paper bag. It got so bad the crowd would chant, "Fire Isiah!" at each game. When Knicks owner James Dolan could no longer ignore the abysmal record, they removed him as coach and made him a scout and consultant, effectively taking away that which meant the world to him.
Along the way, Isiah enjoyed the finer things in life. As executive of the team, he got to enjoy all the perks of management, including some wild nights at NYC clubs. Perhaps it all went to his head, or he began to think with the wrong one, for in 2006, he was successfully sued for sexual harassment by a beefy, tough-looking broad named Anucha Brown Sanders, who claimed he verbally and physically accosted her on the job. MSG management settled the suit, but Thomas continued to insist he was innocent.
And now, two years later, comes news that Isiah was rushed to the hospital Friday after overdosing on sleeping pills. Oddly enough, despite the insistence of police and emergency personnel at the scene, he denies he was the one in crisis, claiming that his daughter was the one treated after she fainted. Why would he lie? Why would he say that it was his daughter that was in crisis, and not himself? Sources claim that Thomas is a man broken since his removal from the front lines of Knicks management. Basketball was everything to him, and now he doesn't know what to do with himself. That's all fine and dandy, but to point the finger at his 17-year-old instead is both spineless and just plain creepy. Is another Isiah Thomas scandal waiting to erupt, one that involves Lauren? Or is he just a petty, self-absorbed man who would throw his daughter under the bus before admitting he is a failure?
