This week brought back a lot of sad memories, as the first anniversary of Anna Nicole Smith's death brought the scourge of humanity into the spotlight once again. Mother Virgie, Howard K., Larry and Danielynn all made appearances at Anna's grave site in the Bahamas. Howard and Virgie should probably stay in the vicinity as the inquest into Anna's son, Daniel, continues. The investigation has been able to ascertain that Daniel's death was a result of an intentional overdose - there was too much methadone in his system for it to have been accidental, and Daniel was not known as a recreational hard drug user. That leaves suicide (he was said to be depressed) or murder (Howard K. was in the room at the time of death).
The coroner in Heath Ledger's death concluded that he died as a result of an accidental overdose. His family and friends (not including rumored lover Mary Kate Olsen) paid tribute to himin a moving seaside ceremony.
The untimely passing of such a gifted artist may have caused some of his peers to take a long, hard look in the mirror and seek professional help: This week saw Kirsten Dunst, Scott Weiland and The Insider's Pat O'Brien all checking in to rehab to address their substance abuse issues.
Those who don't do drugs but need professional attention also saw their names splashed across the headlines this week. Delta Burke, star of 80s sitcom Designing Women, admitted herself for treatment of depression, obsessive-compulsive disorder and hoarding. We wish Delta well in her recovery, and remind her to just let it go, honey. Let it go.
I guess Denise Richards won't be asking for her old job back anytime soon. Her former boss, Heidi Fleiss, was nailed for DUI and possession of pills she couldn't prove were hers. I think it's time for Heidi to go clean up her act somewhere.
It sure seems like Amy Winehouse has. After video of her smoking crack was made public, her record company and family finally forced her into rehab, and by all accounts she's responding well to treatment. She applied for a visa to perform at the Grammies but was - not surprisingly - denied. The embassy then reversed their decision, but Amy wisely decided to stay in London and perform via satellite feed before returning to rehab.
So what are we doing with you? Too straight for rehab, too stable for the psych ward but too famous for the club scene ... at this rate, Coco may never have a little brother or sister. You really should think about a dating service. Or a support group.
