1. Madonna Motherhood changed Madonna Madonna is a devoted mom these days, but back in the ’80s and ’90s, she was every mother’s worst nightmare! Whether expressing herself in racy videos or posing nude for her Sex book, she was determined to shock. “I’m interested in pushing people’s buttons, she said. But, since finding spiritual guidance in Kabbalah and a soulmate in Guy Ritchie, Madonna is singing a different tune. “I have beautiful children and a gorgeous husband. I have my work and my faith, the 49-year-old says. “If that’s boring to some people, I don’t care.
2. Drew Barrymore Drew partied hearty as a child Drew Barrymore’s childhood was anything but normal. Following in the footsteps of her dad, John, who battled substance-abuse problems throughout his life, Drew found herself in rehab at 13. But she’s grateful to have worked through her demons early on. “I got it out of the way, says Drew. “I was young and it was public, but if it hadn’t happened, I don’t know that I would have the priorities that I do now.
3. Mary J. Blige Mary got back on track After dropping out of high school at 16, Mary J. Blige had no direction in life. “I had no self-respect, the singer admits. “Alcohol, sex, drugs — I’d do whatever it took to feel a little better. She credits her husband, Kendu Isaacs, whom she married in 2003, with turning her life around. “He was the first person to ever challenge what I did: ‘Why do you hate yourself?’ the 36-year-old recalls. “He was the first man to ever tell me that I was beautiful.
4. Fergie Fergie kicked her demons Although she told friends she was bulimic in the early ’90s, Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie was hiding a different secret: She was a drug addict. “I started doing Ecstasy, she says. “Then I got addicted to crystal meth. It’s such a fun drug at first. But, the substance abuse soon took its toll. “My weight dropped to 90 pounds, says the 32-year-old, who turned to God to help straighten herself out. “He said: ‘I gave you all these gifts, so what are you doing?’ says Fergie. “I decided to get clean.
5. Christina Aguilera Christina shed her sexy image When Christina Aguilera ditched her squeaky-clean pop princess image to become a raunchy star who did the bump and grind in her “Dirty video, she got a lot of negative feedback. “It’d be easier for me to play Little Miss Pretty, she once said. “But that’s not me. Five years later, the 26-year-old doesn’t feel the need to be so overtly sexual. “I have no need to dress like that anymore, the mom-to-be says. “I want my music to speak for me rather than the dress or lack of dresses I wore.
6. Ashlee Simpson Ashlee changed her look Ashlee Simpson memorably emerged from her older sister Jessica’s shadow in November 2005. That’s when she drunkenly climbed on top of a McDonald’s counter in Toronto and taunted an employee. The whole thing was caught on tape and the 22-year-old was mortified. “I was being a little silly and crazy that day, she admits. A few months after her fast food freak-out, Ashlee revamped her image by going under the knife. “I felt like my nose was big, says Ashlee, who dyed her jet-black hair blond shortly after her surgery and started dressing in a more feminine style. But the singer insists she’s still the same person. “My heart has not changed, she says.
7. Nicole Richie A baby tamed Nicole Before Nicole Richie found fame on The Simple Life, she was a wild child who’d been arrested three times, once for heroin possession. Then in July, the reality star was sentenced to four days in jail after smoking pot, taking Vicodin and driving the wrong way down an LA freeway. “I kept making mistake after mistake, says the 25-year-old. “But at times I didn’t even really feel bad about them. Now that she and her boyfriend, Good Charlotte’s Joel Madden, are expecting, she’s decided to clean up her act. “I have to set the right examples, says Nicole, who’s due in January. “I want my child to look up to me and be proud of me.

Says Pink, “I personally need more examples of how to be better and how to be stronger and how to go a different way.

10. Carmen Electra Carmen got over her insecurities Carmen Electra has always had a thing for bad boys. “I like being around dangerous people who get me into trouble, the 35-year-old once said. But the incident was a wake-up call for Carmen. “I really tried to get my focus back, she says, and admits that she is a lot more centered today. “I’m the most secure in myself now. I’ve felt bad long enough, and I’m over it. |
