Getting popped for allegedly propositioning an undercover cop for an act that cannot be named here (but kind of rhymes with "Horatio"), in a public restroom notorious for anonymous gay sex, after you've spent a good portion of your time in public service behaving like a rabid fundamentalist homophobe ... well, that's gotta be tough to ... swallow.

When Senator Craig got caught cruising Pickle Park on June 11 it should have made national news, considering his consistent anti-gay voting record and lengthy political career. He quietly pleaeded guilty to a reduced charge of disorderly conduct "in hopes of making it go away," he said in a statement. Now he's trying to take back his guilty plea, saying he was not involved in any inappropriate conduct, and that he has never been gay.

Since Craig began retracting and backpedaling, the support of other Republicans on the Hill has shrunk rapidly, with prominent members like John McCain demanding his resignation for conduct unbecoming. That'll leave a mark.

I think Larry Craig should leave office, but I don't think he should be allowed to resign or continue to enjoy fringe benes like health insurance paid for by honest taxpayers. I hope his wife takes him to the cleaners and the dog pees on his slippers.
