Following are other comments from Zooey Deschanel’s interview found in the June/July issue of Jane:
ON WEARING CHILDREN’S CLOTHING… “I’m always looking for school uniforms, trying to squeeze into kids’ clothing. It’s sort of a party trick, the way I can get myself into tiny dresses.
ON MAKING HER OWN ALBUM…“I was about to explode, I had to get these songs out of me. I’m going to shop it around when it’s all done, but I really don’t know what my expectations are. The songs are like the old stuff I love, like Dusty Springfield. I’ve always listened to music that was made before I was born.
ON HOLLYWOOD LABELING HER AS QUIRKY…“I never thought of myself as quirky. I was surprised when people said it.
ON HER FEAR OF STREET MUSICIANS… “Street musicians make me nervous. I don’t
know where to look. I don’t know how to act.
ON TEACHING HERSELF HOW TO PLAY THE UKULELE… “It’s little—I can feel awkward behind a guitar—and it only has four strings, so it’s easy to learn. And I just think it’s cute.
ON HER EX-BOYFRIEND ACTOR JASON SCHWARTZMAN… “We’re still friends.
ON HER MEAN GIRL MOMENT… “In seventh grade, I filled out a ‘bill me later’ subscription card for Sassy in the name of a boy who tormented me.
ON GOING TO NORTHWESTERN UNIVERSITY FOR ONLY A YEAR…“I’d started working before I went, and it got hard to juggle it all. I was being offered so many jobs. Rather than look a gift horse in the mouth, I packed up and left. I would’ve been crazy not to.
