Prince Harry to fight in Iraq!
Prince Harry is getting his wish. Harry's wish is unlike those of other 22-year-old men; he wants to go to Iraq. Harry will be deployed to the war-torn country in May or June, the United Kingdom's Ministry of Defense announced on Thursday. In a joint statement with Clarence House - Harry's residence, which speaks on his behalf, the Ministry of Defense said, "We can confirm today that Prince Harry will deploy to Iraq later this year in command of a troop from 'A Squadron' of the Household Cavalry Regiment. Whilst in Iraq Cornet Wales [Harry's regimental title] will carry out a normal troop commander's role, involving leading a troop of 12 men in four Scimitar armored reconnaissance vehicles, each with a crew of three. The decision to deploy him has been a military one…The royal household has been consulted throughout." Last year Harry graduated as an officer from the Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst and is now a part of the Blues and Royals regiment. Des Browne, Defense Minister said that two squadrons from Harry's Household Cavalry Regiment are being deployed in the coming months. Harry has asked not to be excluded from the deployment. On his 21st birthday he said, "There is no way I am going to put myself through Sandhurst and then sit on my arse back home while my boys are out fighting for their country." Still, despite Harry's insistence on being a part of the mission, many are concerned that a person of Harry's stature within the regiment might put other soldiers in danger. Royal correspondent for the London Evening Standard, Robert Jobson said, "This is like President Bush sending a son to the frontline. The decision is both dangerous and courageous at the same time…It is a success for Harry but he has become the number one target for insurgents." Harry will be the first royal to serve in a war zone in 25 years. The last royal to serve was his uncle, the Duke of York, who was a helicopter pilot in the Falklands conflict. Though his father, grandfather and brother have all served in the military, none of them have seen war action. Prince William is not eligible for combat service since he is second in line for the British crown. |
