Naomi Campbell admits maid assault

Supermodel Naomi Campbell pleaded guilty in Manhattan Criminal Court on Tuesday to assaulting her housekeeper with a mobile telephone and was sentenced to five days of community service.

Campbell's admitting to the criminal act came after months of denying the accusations lodged by Ana Scolavino, who required four stitches to the back of her head as a result of the incident reports E Online.

"I threw a cell phone in the apartment," Campbell said during her appearance at Manhattan Criminal Court. "The cell phone hit Ana. This was an accident because I did not intend to hit her."

Campbell, who appeared in court in black pants, gray tweed double-breasted jacket and dark sunglasses, was also fined $363 and ordered to attend anger management classes after pleading guilty to third-degree assault.

The British beauty was initially charged in March 2006 with second-degree assault and faced up to seven years in prison.

Prosecutors said in court documents Campbell threw the phone at Ana Scolavino, 42, during a dispute over a pair of jeans. They said the phone hit the woman in the back of her head, opening a wound that required four staples to close.

"I pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor in court today," Campbell said in a statement to the Associated Press. "That's the best way I know to say I'm sorry to Ana. I accepted responsibility and I'm prepared to take my punishment. But I'm not going to let this incident define me. The past is the past. My future holds great things and I'm getting on with my life."

Campbell, 36, is no stranger to controversy and has blamed her hot temper on lingering resentment toward her father for abandoning her as a child.

November 2006 Campbell is sued, for the second time, by former maid Gaby Gibson, who says the British catwalker viciously assaulted her while calling her a dumb Romanian. Campbell's lawyer denies the claims.

July 2006 -- Former employee Amanda Brack, 20, of Fort Lauderdale, Florida, accuses Campbell of assault, battery, false imprisonment and infliction of emotional distress in incidents that started a month after she began working for her in February 2005.

June 2006 Gibson files her first lawsuit in Manhattan's state Supreme Court, accusing the supermodel of hitting her, calling her names and threatening to have her arrested. Campbell's lawyer says the lawsuit was dismissed because Gibson's lawyer filed papers too late.

August 2004 -- A maid, Millicent Burton, claims she was slapped across the face by Campbell. The supermodel accuses Burton of instigating the fight.
