Helen Mirren received Best Actress awards for her performance as
Queen Elizabeth II in royal drama 'The Queen' and for her eponymous role in
the TV mini-series 'Elizabeth I'.
Fellow British star, Sacha Baron Cohen was named Best Actor in a Film
Musical or Comedy for his portrayal of a spoof Kazakhstan journalist in
'Borat: Cultural Learnings of America for Make Benefit Glorious Nation of
Kazakhstan'.
The evening also saw Justin Timberlake get his own back on Prince, who
slated the 'SexyBack' singer at an Emmy Awards after-show party last year.
Timberlake was there to present Prince with the award for Best Original
Song, for his hit 'The Song of the Heart' from animation 'Happy Feet'.
However, the 'Purple Rain' singer failed to appear to collect his prize and
Timberlake took it upon himself to accept the award on his behalf by
stooping down to emulating the star's petit height.
He said, "Well I guess Prince couldn't be here", then crouched down and
continued, "I'd like to accept this award on his behalf."
However, the "Raspberry Beret" singer didn’t seem to take offense to the jab reports US weekly. Later in the broadcast, when Hugh Grant informed the crowd that Prince had been stuck in L.A.’s notorious traffic, the diminutive musician stood up and took a belated bow.
Other winners included Forest Whitaker, who struggled to hold back tears as
he collected his gong for Best Actor in a Film Drama for his role as Ugandan
dictator Idi Amin in 'The Last King of Scotland', 'Babel' - starring Brad
Pitt and Cate Blanchett - won Best Film in the drama category and Meryl
Streep received a nod for her performance in 'The Devil Wears Prada'.
