The ceremony was performed by a Scientology minister and it was initially
believed the marriage wouldn't be legal after the Mayor of Bracciano said
the couple needed to have a civil ceremony in the town center .
However, representatives for Tom and Katie insisted the nuptials were legal
because the pair had made their wedding "official" in the US before leaving
for Italy.
Candles led the way up the historic steps of Castle Odeschalchi set on picturesque Lake Bracciano, close to Rome, as the parents of 7-month-old Suri made their love official. David Miscavige, the head of the religion that counts Tom, 44, among its most devoted supporters, personally led the ceremony that started at 7 pm Italian time (1 pm Eastern Time).
Guests had been staying at the Hassler hotel in Rome and were driven to the castle during the afternoon. Katie, 27, and Suri arrived around 2.15, followed by Tom an hour later.
The couple had spent the day, primping for the ceremony, with Jessica Simpson's hairdresser, Ken Paves getting Katie's coif just right. On Friday evening more than 100 guests had attended a rehearsal dinner at Villa Aurelia, a private estate atop Rome's highest hill.
Tom's close friend David Miscavige - the head of the Church of Scientology -
was best man, Katie's sister Nancy Blaylock was the matron of honor, while
the 'Batman Begins' actress was given away by her father Martin.
As predicted Katie wore an off-the-shoulder Armani wedding gown with an
ivory silk train complete with Swarovski crystals, while Tom said "I do" in
a navy blue tuxedo also designed by Giorgio Armani, who provided outfits for
the entire wedding party.
Giorgio Armani was the man behind everything that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes wore throughout the week.
"Katie wanted a simple, elegant dress that was rich in material with a slim silhouette," Giorgio Armani says. "I couldn't have been more in agreement. I wanted to make it modern but at the same time, complement the sweetness and energy she conveys."

The rings the pair exchanged were designed by Cartier and made from white
gold adorned with diamonds.
After the service was complete guests were treated to cocktails, Italian
hors d'oeuvres then a lavish multi-course meal, while blind Italian tenor
Andrea Bocelli provided the entertainment.
The newlyweds' cake was five-tiered, made of white chocolate and decorated
with marzipan roses and white chocolate chips.
