Janet Jackson’s "So Excited" Sorely disappointing

Janet Jackson’s new Virgin Records album, 20 Y. O., feeling the love from Oprah Winfrey’s audience could top next week’s Billboard 200 chart with a total anywhere between 340-360k reports HitsdailyDouble.

"There's something to be said for not saying anything,'' she says at the start of 20 Y.O. "I've talked about racism, spousal abuse, empowering women, children. I want to keep it light. I don't want to be serious. I want to have fun.''

And light may go right across the board, the sexy star's last album opened with 381K.

In other news, the sophomore single from Janet's "20 Y.O." has been ripped apart by Billboard.com's Chuck Taylor .

"So Excited" is about as intriguing and eventful as previous "Call On Me"—and that equates disaster. Opening with a promising rip from Herbie Hancock's "Rockit," the track soon disintegrates into a breathy, nonmelodic jam that is ultimately hijacked by rapper Khia. Janet has so much on the line—still living in the land of the unforgiving for the absurdly overhyped Super Bowl incident—and needs to give it everything she has. "So Excited" is bland, lacks innovation and sniffs of impending doom for her album. Is this the best she's got? Sorely disappointing.

Use the singing pipes in a elegant and classy way Janet. Act your age and show some maturity other than sexual, plainly speaking. She needs to quit talking trash about her pervy love-life and stop dressing like a porn/tranny freak, and looking so much like her pervy brother, singing the same rehash of her younger days that is now become comical and ironic. What did we really see in her that was so wonderful. It's not the superbowl incident. People don't like, whom they don't like. It's a complete turn-off of the new her.

I'm not a huge Janet Jackson fan but as a world traveler I get what it is that young women around the world divine in her presence. Every where I go there are posters of Janet Jackson and her songs play on the radio.

Where other well known talents oversing and male rappers deflate the significance of the spoken word, Janet whispers less obvious nuances many of which I cannot relate or even readily appreciate.

I saw this headline and felt obliged to read it. But after reading the salty missive I realized that the reviewer was yet another person hijacking a Jackson to marginalize and condescend to what end I can only hazard a guess.
I can tell the reviewer is no musician because whether you enjoy the single or not, there is some really exciting movement going on. The recombination of Southern Hip Hop with Minneapolis R&B and Jackson's signature bird-like presence is nothing to scoff at or marginalize. Khia is brought into the mainstream with a jump start and that is exciting.
Imagine if you will what the American Black population that grew up with Janet from Goodtimes on, feels about her latest contribution, or better yet, how about the women of Egypt, Saudia Arabia, Ethiopia and Japan who have only known her from her breathy melodies for the last twenty years. In places where patriarchal hegemony singes women daily, it seems fitting that an underated and underestimated voice would whisper and pout herself into a position whereby she displays a cognizance and sophistication completely missing in the colour by numbers debauchery of Beyonce who is really painfully vapid.
It seems fitting that Janet Jackson's whispering ode to an acknowledgement of female gratification is heard above the entitled self-gratification of yet another critically acclaimed Madonna self-parody that places Madge at the center of the universe. And it is painfully obvious how biased the reviewer is against any contribution that Janet Jackson can make after her obsolete stamp was doled out.

I wonder if the reviewer suffers from hindsight bias or is just lazy? One would hope a reviewer for such an important
rag would actually listen to the music they are reviewing...But then we all realize that acknowledging the
creative intellegence of black folk is left to people that actually listen to music and participate in that music.
I'd venture a guess that the reviewer is thrilled to see his name in the dull light of the computer's glow and that he sits back with a smug look on his face knowing that he just insulted Janet Jackson, I bet he's really happy that lots of undereducated ( in music) people will read it =agreeing on principle alone.
How does it feel to get paid to belittle art for money?
It must be strange to review music for the priveledged few that can read good.
I cherish the day a reviewer arrives on the scene that actually listens and reviews music from the perspective of poor people, underprivildged people, people with no voice.
Maybe it seems illogical to the reviewer but perhaps it is time the critics begin traveling so that they might listen to music as the rest of the world, that is those folks that probably can't even afford to buy new cds hears it?

Enough, with all the Janet bashing! Janet's new album is solid. So Excited, is just the type of dance record we've come to love and expect from Janet. This album is not earth shattering, nor was it meant to be. She said, " this album is about having fun", and that's just what she delivers. So, why review it as if it should be more than what was intended? She also stated on the Today Show, "she's already been where her younger competitors are the in their careers". Janet, has nothing to more prove. There are very few Pop/R&B entertainers who have been able to do what she's continued to do for over 20 years. After 20 years she's still bringing a smile to our faces, joy to our hearts, and getting us out on the dance floor. Like one of my favorite tracks on the album let's just "Enjoy" this multi-talented artist!

I would like to just say that I love the Janet CD from Excited to Do It 2 Me,With U, Daybreak, Enjoy and Take Care which are my absolute favorite. People are quick to critize Janet because of the SuperBowl incident. Damita Jo was a very good album also but because of the SuperBowl incident everything about Janet is being talked about in the negative. The comments about Beyonce and Ciara, Janet paved the way for them, they are trying to be her but with a modern twist. If you are a true Janet Jackson fan than you will love the album. If you are someone who looks and likes to hang on the negative or the past like she says in "Enjoy" than of course you will have something bad to say about the album.

Janet is brilliant, she as the blood. give her credit, lets face it, not mant people can say they have had a succsessful career for 20 years. i live her.

U all need 2 stop hating on Janet. Her new album is off the chains. I am a huge fan of hers and belive that So Excited is a very nice dance song! Stop hating and let her do her thing

stop hatin' janet's great she looks great her album is great and thats it. i dont understand why everyone is going into a hissyfit about the superbowl and the 'so excited' video. i respect janet so much for ripping her breast out at the super bowl to protect her brother. i luv janet. shit i might wip my breast out right now
