Eminem has settled a lawsuit filed against the unauthorised use of his songs
as mobile phone ringtones.
It was reported last October that lawyers representing the controversial
rapper had filed writs, in a Detroit court, against five firms to prevent
them earning money from his back catalogue - which includes the worldwide
hits 'Stan', 'Just Lose It' and 'Mosh' - without permission and without
paying him royalties.
The original papers of the complaint said Eminem was seeking to stop "the
blatant and unauthorized use" of his songs and music for ringtones, which
have "become extremely popular and have spawned an entire industry".
New court documents have now revealed the lawsuit was dismissed on June 1 of
this year.
Howard Hertz - a Bloomfield Hills lawyer for Eminem and his various
publishing companies - has refused to disclose the exact terms of the
settlement with the main defendant.
He said: "We reached an amicable agreement."
However, court documents did reveal one company, Nextones.com, failed to
respond to the original lawsuit and was ordered to pay $195,000 dollars in
damages on May 16.
