Best Kiss: Brokeback Mountain

Brokeback Mountain and Wedding Crashers won a total of five prizes at the MTV Movie Awards in California reports BBCnews.

Jake Gyllenhaal won best performance for his role in the cowboy romance, and best kiss with co-star Heath Ledger. "This is a real honor, not just for me and Heath but for all of you, that you picked this movie and this kiss over all the other ones," Gyllenhaal said

Comedy Wedding Crashers was named best film and collected best screen team (Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson.) and breakthrough performance (for Isla Fisher ) awards, voted for by MTV viewers.

"For most people, playing a bipolar nymphomaniac would have been a challenge," Fisher said with a grin. "But I just played myself."

Vaughn, accepting his award by video, said that working with Wilson made him "feel like a jockey on the back of a great horse."

"I thought we had a shot at best on-screen kiss," Wilson quipped.

Jim Carrey won a lifetime achievement award and appeared on stage in a white suit with a group of winged angels reports BBCnews. Comedy actor Will Ferrell, who presented Carey with the honor, said: "This man's versatility makes Thomas Jefferson look like a big fat idiot."

Jessica Alba parodied "King Kong," "Mission Impossible: III" and "The Da Vinci Code," as the host of the 2006 MTV Movie Awards, known for taking a lighthearted look at the industry it honors reports ChinaDaily.

"It's not even like an awards show," said actor Zach Braff. "It feels like a birthday party."

Alba took home her own Golden Popcorn trophy for her sexy striptease performance in "Sin City."

"Thank you to all the perverts who voted for me," she said. "Thank you to the fans. I do movies for you. Practice safe sex and drive hybrids if you can."

Actor Steve Carell won the award for best comedic performance for his role in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, but the film failed to convert four other nominations.

Pitt and Jolie won the award for the best fight in the same movie.

"Angelina and Brad are stuck in traffic," Farrell said. "They're doing their thing and we all wish them a big congratulations."

Film-maker Spike Lee collected the Silver Bucket of Excellence for his 1989 film Do The Right Thing, which tackles the issue of racial tension.

The award recognises a film from the past which has relevance to contemporary issues.

Rapper LL Cool J presented Spike Lee with the Silver Bucket of Excellence for "Do the Right Thing."

"The sad thing is that the issues that we tried to address with `Do the Right Thing' are still with us today, so how much progress have we made?" Lee asked as he accepted his award.

Other performances awarded at the event included best villain for Hayden Christensen in Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith, and best hero for Christian Bale's lead role in Batman Begins.

The show also featured musical performances by soul duo Gnarls Barkley, rockers AFI and Christina Aguilera, who performed "Ain't No Other Man."

The awards ceremony is due to be aired on MTV on 8 Jume
