Angels and Demons is set to get the movie treatment

Da Vinci Code author Dan Brown’s first religious thriller Angels and Demons is set to get the movie treatment.

The Da Vinci Code movie took $224m around the world in its first weekend, despite poor reviews and controversy over its religious subject reports BBC news.

Columbia Pictures, the studio behind the film, hopes an adaptation of Angels and Demons will have the same effect.

The novel again features Robert Langdon, played by Tom Hanks in the film, The Da Vinci Code .

In "Angels," Langdon's character tries to solve a murder and unravel a plot by an ancient group, the Illuminati, to blow up the Vatican during a papal conclave.

Akiva Goldsman has been asked to write the script, having penned the screenplay for The Da Vinci Code.

His previous work includes A Beautiful Mind, for which he won an Oscar, Cinderella Man and Batman and Robin, which starred George Clooney, Variety on-line reported.

Variety said the development of Angels and Demons was still in the very early stages but that it was likely that the production team that worked on the Da Vinci Code would be reassembled for the new film.
