Oscar fashion: Hits and misses |

Last night’s Academy Awards was relatively tame as far as fashion was concerned. Most of the ladies looked lovely, but not noteworthy. There were many good looks, but only a few great ones. Most actresses were able to steer clear of the “what was she thinking? category.
One of the biggest standouts of the evening was Michelle Williams in a mustard colored Vera Wang gown. The dress’ deep V-neck allowed a view of Michelle’s 19th-century Fred Leighton jewels as well as her ample cleavage - a result of her recent pregnancy. While some might have found the color of Williams’s 40s-style gown to be too much, we here at the Bosh thought it was a daring pick that paid off. Michelle looked incredible.
Vera Wang created another of the night’s winning looks for Keira Knightley. Though she didn’t go home with the Best Actress award, Knightley was intoxicating in a wine shade. Her one-shoulder gown was accented with a stunning emerald, ruby and diamond necklace from Bulgari. Entertainment Tonight’s Steven Cojocaru said of Keira’s look: "From the shoulders to the jewelry to the dress to the color to the shape - she was pure movie star."
And now for the evening’s biggest misses. Charlize Theron did it again with Dior. The actress chose a dark green gown by John Galliano for Christian Dior - the same designer who put her on our worst dressed list for the Golden Globes. The dress was over the top and featured an enormous bow on the shoulder. It could have been stolen from the “Dynasty wardrobe closet or worked well at a 1980s prom.
Best Supporting Actress nominee Amy Adams chose a poufy brown Carolina Herrera Gown with striped accents because of its pockets. Perhaps if she had picked her look using different qualifications, she’d have been better off. Like with Charlize, Amy’s dress was a little too couture for the Oscars.
Naomi Watts went with a nude gown by Givenchy that looked like a reject from “Project Runway. The dress was tattered in all the wrong places and made the petite star look hippy. Too bad she didn’t follow Uma Thurman’s example. Thurman wore a Versace dress of the same shade that was striking.
Other notable looks were worn by women who experimented with color. It’s easy to look great in black - as Jennifer Aniston has proven time and time again (this time in Rochas) - but trickier to hit a grand slam in a bright hue. Actresses who pulled that off last night were Jennifer Lopez in a Jean Desses green gown, Jada Pinckett-Smith in bright blue Roberto Cavalli and Salma Hayek in a slate blue Versace one shouldered gown.
