Disappointing night for Brokeback at Oscars |

The weeks leading up to last night’s Academy Awards show may have been all about Brokeback Mountain, but the little movie that could was edged out of many of the big awards that it was up for. The film’s biggest win was for Best Director for Ang Lee. It also picked up a trophy for Best Adapted Screenplay. Though three of Brokeback’s four main actors were nominated, none of them went home with an Oscar.
The acting awards were given to George Clooney for Best Supporting Actor in Syriana, Rachel Weisz for Best Supporting Actress in The Constant Gardener, Phillip Seymour Hoffman for Best Actor in Capote and Reese Witherspoon for Best Actress in Walk the Line. Disappointingly, though Hoffman had made a bet with some of his friends years ago that he would bark his acceptance speech were he ever to win an Oscar, his speech was given in English and not any recognizable dog dialect.
In the acting categories, there were few surprises, but there were a couple of dark horse winners at the event. The biggest of these was in the Best Picture category where Crash was recognized as the year’s best film. Paul Haggis, the movie’s writer, producer and director, had a big night. He also won for Best Original Screenplay with his writing partner, Robert Moresco. This is Haggis’s second Best Picture win in two years. He wrote last year’s winner Million Dollar Baby as well. Another big surprise gave rap group Three 6 Mafia the award for Best Original Song for “It’s Hard Out Here for A Pimp,? from Hustle & Flow.
