I did crack and the guy who would cook it used a test tube and not a spoon which is more efficient. After cooking it he used a wired to get the gue out of the water and apply it to a mirror where it dried. But you could apply it to the chore-boy in a broken off test tube and then light it using a cotton swap dipped in grain alcohol and one time we were out of grain and had to use rubbing alcohol but this is not recomended. I never bought it but was treated to it by a guy nicknamed good-time charlie.
