ICANN delays .xxx porn domain (again)
A final decision on the controversial .xxx domain has been delayed again. Paul Twomey, president of the Internet Corporation of Assigned Names and Numbers said on Thursday the group is still awaiting the recommendations of an advisory committee reviewing the proposal, and has no plans to make a decision at ICANN's meeting this week in Vancouver reports BBC news.

Plans for the .xxx have been criticised by many people and organisations, among them former Icann board member Karl Auerbach and US conservative religious groups, including the Family Research Council.

Approval had already been delayed numerous times. First, when Pope John Paul II died, then, after the intervention of the governmental advisory committee (GAC) of ICANN, and finally following pressure from the American Government reports Times UK.

The reason given for the delay, this time was that the GAC wanted to review a 350-page report on the domain by ICANN, released just this week - despite it being completed more than two months ago.

ICM Registry, the company that proposed and plans to run the .xxx, said the domain would make it easier to find and filter pornographic material online. Only pornographers will be allowed to apply for an .xxx domain, they will pay a premium and will be expected to sign up to best practice rules and guidelines.

The domain for sex sites was approved in June and final negotiations over how it should be run were due to conclude in early December.

Syracuse University professor Milton Mueller said the United States has compromised its neutrality over the assignment of domains by intervening in the .xxx case. He said Washington has been lobbying other governments to oppose the plan reports Reuters.

"If ICANN caves in to this pressure, it reveals to the world that it really is just a plaything of the U.S. administration, and the U.S. reveals to the world that it is able and willing to abuse its power over ICANN," Mueller said.

Although I am a staunch believer in Freedom of Speech. ...I agree that the .xxx domain name should be permanantly shelved and never allowed to go forward.

Giving the .xxx domain legitimacy helps to refinforce and legitimize the Pornography industry which, despite whatever your personal position on the subject may be, Pornography is is harmful to Society as a whole.

With the goal of creating a better world, both the consumers and the producer of Pornography could be using their resources and valuable time towards making this planet free of sexual slavery, abuse of children, and the involvement of the criminal element that helps promote the pornography industry.

Consumption of Pornography is a mental illness which drives away human interaction and de-sensitizes the human experience to to love and itinmacy.

Production of Pornography is a protected act of speech that is abused by thousands of Pornography producers who prey upon the weak and the the poor and the needy and the unsuspecting to engage in an industry that while is generally legitmate according to our Constitution is a hurtful and desparate industry with no other purpose than using their Consitiutional freedoms for the purposes of exploitation and greed.

My personal opinion is that the Internet was not developed as a distribution channel for Pornography and further legitimization of it is the same as giving tacit approval to the vast network of individuals who coerce women and other people to engage in Pornography .

That's my 2 cents.

Giving legitimacy helps legitimize? This sort of circular reasoning and illogic typifies those who fear liberty.

"Consumption of Pornography is a mental illness which drives away human interaction and de-sensitizes the human experience to to love and itinmacy."

Unfounded drivel.

"...an industry that while is generally legitmate according to our Constitution is a hurtful and desparate industry with no other purpose than using their Consitiutional freedoms for the purposes of exploitation and greed."

Last I could tell, the porn industry held no guns to the heads, or otherwise forced consumption of their products.

K.B. has fear of free market, as well as fear of liberty.

Legitimize,

In case you guys haven't noticed. It is ligit. There are more porn sites on the .com than any other and they are making more money than any other site bar amazon and ebay. I think the xxx is a great idea and I think they should force sex sites onto that domain. It was be VERY easy to block for kids and make the internet safer. Making sex sites go to the xxx has nothing to do with free speech either, if these sites do not want to go to xxx than it tells you they want to market to kids rely on popups and tricks to lure kids into their sites

"a hurtful and desparate industry with no other purpose than using their Consitiutional freedoms for the purposes of exploitation and greed"

Maybe so, however that can also describe Capitalism as practiced in the U. S.; not to mention religion and political expression.

Our society is sex centered yet most have no outlet. Porn is the symptom not the cause.
