In a 40-minute news conference with journalists from around the world, Pop star Robbie Williams attacked the media for their coverage of the Kate Moss cocaine claims, which he said could have led Moss to attempt suicide. Moss has lost lucrative contracts with Chanel, H&M and Burberry after the Daily Mirror newspaper first reported the claims about drug taking.
Meanwhile, W magazine has put Kate Moss on the cover of its November issue, making it the first fashion publication to do so since the drugs allegations.
Deputy editor Julie L Belcove writes: "It has always been Moss's complexity, piercingly evident in her expressive face, that has made her so compelling to look at.
"The media has a lot to answer for," said Williams.
The singer, who has undergone treatment for drug addiction in the past, said: "What she does in her private life should be her private life."
"You're talking about a woman who has never harmed anyone, has never pretended to be someone she isn't. I find the way some in the various media groups, who I have personally taken cocaine with, are now saying she shouldn't take cocaine."
He added: "She's an absolute icon, she's beautiful. I think people should just get off her back because she's done nothing wrong. I've been to rehab. It's not fun. I hope she gets well. She deserves to be happy."
