Peter Jennings, one of the most recognizable journalists on American television, died yesterday at home. He was 67 and lived in Manhattan reports New York Times.
On April 5, Mr. Jennings had disclosed that he was suffering from lung cancer, first in a written statement released by ABC and later that night on "World News Tonight," the evening news broadcast that he had led since September 1983
"Peter died with his family around him, without pain and in peace. He knew he'd lived a good life," his wife and children said in a statement.
Jennings was the face of ABC News whenever a big story broke reports News Day.
Jennings was worldly and smart. He was known as a demanding and exacting newsman and anchor. But he owed none of it to formal schooling and all of it to ABC News. He spent 20 years traveling the globe for the network starting in the 1970s when ABC made him the youngest anchor ever, at age 26, in London writes USATODAY
"Peter has been our colleague, our friend, and our leader in so many ways. None of us will be the same without him," ABC News President David Westin said.
Westin noted that once Jennings learned of his illness this spring, "He moved straight into an aggressive chemotherapy treatment. He knew that it was an uphill struggle. But he faced it with realism, courage and a firm hope that he would be one of the fortunate ones. In the end, he was not."
