CBGB on the Bowery has for 32 years been a hotbed of exciting, innovative rock activity. If a bit seedy, it nevertheless is exquisitely cool. But it is endangered, facing possible eviction at the end of August when its lease expires.
An effort to save CBGB is being set in action by the Save CBGB legal defense fund. A series of benefit concerts starting next Tuesday in combination with an e-Bay auction of rock memorabilia will all contribute to the cause.
Elvis Costello, Motorhead, Norah Jones and Sting are all contributing items for the auction. Among the groups performing the special shows are the Misfits (August 12) the Dead Boys (August 26 & 27) and the Gorilla Biscuits (August 14).
The Bosh officially calls on CBGB's landlord to give the place a reasonable and fair deal. (By Scott Rose)
