Witch Side Are You On?
|
Back in 1692 in the lovely town of Salem, Massachusetts, 20 people were accused of witchcraft and put to death. The infamous trials consisted of the accused being held underwater for an extended period. If they drowned, they were innocent; if they lived, they were guilty and so had to be punished. The United States currently treats immigrants along those same lines; if you as a foreigner have so much money that you don't need to work, you're welcome here, but if you must work to live, and can perform a job function necessary to the national economy which born Americans don't want to do, you have no rights. A statue has been erected in Salem depicting Elizabeth Montgomery as Samantha Stevens of "Bewitched" fame. She is shown sitting sidesaddle on a broomstick with her skirt blowing up behind her beneath a crescent moon. The statue was sponsored by the nostalgic cable channel TV Land; Salem officials hope that it will increase tourism. Dissenters complain that it trivializes the monstrous events of 1692 and others complain that it is just shlock marketing for the "Bewitched" movie coming out next Friday. The Bosh just hopes that this doesn't start a trend for witch statues in public; seeing images of Condoleeza Rice and/or Margaret Spellings is the last thing we need. (By Scott Rose) |
