Two days after his arrest on assault charges, Oscar winner Russell Crowe publicly apologized for his phone toss in the midst of a promotional tour for his latest film.
In television interviews with MSNBC and on the CBS "Late Show with David Letterman," Crowe cited the strain of loneliness and frustration at being unable to get calls through to his wife in Australia for the phone toss.
"I'm extremely sorry for this whole incident and I regret everything that took place," the New Zealand-born actor told Letterman. "The bottom line is I did something pretty stupid. ... This is possibly the most shameful situation I've ever gotten myself (into) in my life."
Crowe told Letterman "a few calls were made" by a NYPD friend after his arrest.

"I've got some friends in this town because I've been coming in and out of New York for quite a long time," Crowe said to Letterman.
New York police have rejected claims they gave star treatment to Russell Crowe during their investigation of the assault case against the Oscar-winning Australian actor.
"We checked and he wasn't given any preferential treatment," NYPD detective John Sweeney said.
