Oprah has announced that William Faulkner is going to be the star presence of her book club this summer. O's books for June, July and August are "As I Lay Dying," "The Sound and the Fury," and "Light in August."
Nobel prize winner Faulkner is renowned for having a dense and impenetrable writing style. There are books which explain his novels line by line, and more books that explain the explanations. Some passages in Faulkner's novels are illustrative of the confusion the character senses at a particular moment; an obvious prescription for fun. The novels are set in the fictional Yoknapatawpha county, which resembles Faulkner's environs in Mississippi. While we admit there is much greatness in these books, we beg that you not force us to read them again.
Faulkner contributed to the writing of some famous movies including "The Big Sleep" and "To Have and Have Not," both with Bogart and Bacall. (By Scott Rose)
