Finland-based, Nokia Corp. has announced the Nokia 770, a handheld tablet for Web-browsing over a wireless broadband connection, the company's first non-phone mobile device. The new Internet Tablet, unveiled Wednesday and slated to go on sale this summer, is based on the open-source Linux operating system reports Business Week.

The benefit to using Linux to run the 770 is that there are many developers working on Linux-based applications, and that could make it easier for the 770 to appeal to a wider variety of users. With Wi-Fi built in, there are dozens of applications that could be developed for the 770, including the ability to use it as a kind of remote control for a digital home reports Globe and Mail.

The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet features a high-resolution (800x480) widescreen display with zoom and on-screen keyboard, ideal for viewing online content over Wi-Fi. Other features include the ablitlity to the Internet utilizing Bluetooth wireless technology via a compatible mobile phone, linux based Nokia Internet Tablet 2005 software edition, Internet Radio, RSS News reader, Image viewer and a full set of media players, including Flash, MP3, Real Audio, WAV, MPEG4, PNG, SVG-tiny, JPEG, and GIF and animated GIF.

Industry analysts gave the Internet Tablet, Priced at $350 a lukewarm reception and questioned if there was a market for the device, which has relatively low-memory capacity and no keyboard. The Nokia 770 Internet Tablet is planned to start shipping in the third quarter of 2005 in selected countries in the Americas and Europe.
