Andy Warhol's 'Liz' |

Andy Warhol's famous image of Elizabeth Taylor and a Roy Lichtenstein painting of a sexy blond nude - both classic Pop Art images - were the stars at Sotheby's sale of contemporary art last night
Lawrence Graff, the London jeweler, outbid five other contenders for "Liz," one of Andy Warhol's series of 13 paintings of Ms. Taylor. The 1963 painting was being sold by Irving Blum, the Los Angeles art dealer who had owned it for 40 years. Estimated at $9 million to $12 million, "Liz" brought $12.6 million, including the fee Sotheby's charges its buyers reports New york Times.
Tobias Meyer, Sotheby's head of contemporary art and the evening's auctioneer, noted that Warhol's $9 million to $12 million estimate had been considered aggressive. But he said the figure was "completely justified in the market" as bidders drove the price above $12 million reports Reuters.
Gianni Versace's estate sold Lichtensteins "Blue Nude" (1995), a late painting that incorporates many of the artist's familiar themes: the nude figure; the use of mirrors within mirrors; and reflections. It was expected to sell for $2.5 million to $3.5 million. Chapin Carson, a Sotheby's expert, took the $5.2 million winning bid for an unidentified collector.
