Millions Say Farewell to Pope

The funeral Mass was punctuated by frequent applause, a sign of respect here, and signs and chants demanding John Paul be declared a saint: "Santo Subito!" "Sainthood Now!" Others waved red and white flags from the pope's homeland and chanted "Polska, Polska"; still others chanted his name: "Giovanni Paolo!" "John Paul!" reports LA Times

The 75-minute service included multiple references to the extensive bridge building that John Paul II oversaw during his service as the leader of the Catholic Church. Bishop George Niederauer, who led the service, said that it was ability to work with leaders of many of the world's religions, as well as political and social leaders, that made him a vital leader and enduring example of compassion and strength.
"If he could shepherd the world while confined to a chair, we can tend to our own corners with joy and peace," Bishop Niederauer said.
