Like A Lampshade In A Whorehouse
That is the title of Phyllis Diller's autobiography, committed to paper with the assistance of writer Richard Buskin. One learns from the volume how Phyllis Diller made comedy from her distressing personal circumstances, among which was a horrible marriage. For instance, when she started to have great success after a stellar appearance on the Jack Paar Show, her husband began to regularly fake heart attacks for attention; he stopped bathing; he pretended to manage her career, which, she says, "made absolutely no sense" because he "was someone who couldn't sell Windex to a Peeping Tom." That kind of biting sarcasm typifies the Phyllis Diller style; believe me, this book is a fun read. (By Scott Rose) |
