Kirstie Alley "Fat Actress" |

Of all the people I expected Kirstie Alley's new show, "Fat Actress", to offend, I have to say that the community of eating disorder recoverers was not high on the list. I expected the women's groups to come out of the woodwork and criticize the show's treatment of weight problems and they did. The president of the National Organization for Women said, "A show that seems to be set up to make fun of fat people or to describe how miserable their lives are, is not sending a good message." I expected the heavy people themselves to be offended and they were. But bulimics just weren't on my radar. Apparently, in one scene of the pilot, which can be viewed online here, Alley suggests that she trying purging in order to lose weight. The suggestion prompted this response from the chief of the National Eating Disorders Association: "There is nothing funny about eating disorders, and to make comedic references to anorexia, bulimia or binge-eating disorder is dangerous." While it's true that eating disorders like bulimia are a serious problem and shouldn't be trivialized, it is ridiculous to make any topic taboo in terms of humor. Just ask Jay Leno.
