Anti-Christ Crucified In England
|
"Jerry Springer: The Opera" was a hit as a satirical musical, running for a year and a half in London's West End. It was scheduled to tour until 2006 but that tour has been postponed because religious groups threatened legal action against theaters choosing to run the show. Those religious groups call the show blasphemous and say that its Jerry Springer character is "the Antichrist." Most theatre critics who have evaluated the work without religious prejudice have given it high marks for its artistic worth. Representative of "guests" who appear in it are chicks with dicks and an adult male who confesses to his girlfriend that he wants to be an adult baby complete with diapers. In the second act, Jerry is in hell and has to get the devil and god to reconcile so he can return to life. Why shouldn't people be free to play with such ideas? These religious perverts get so wearisome; except that there is no such place as the literal hell, we would gladly send them there with one-way tickets. (By Scott Rose) |
