Sideways sweeps the Independent Spirit Awards

Paul Giamatti
Though he might not have been rewarded with an Oscar nomination, Paul Giamatti proved he was a real winner at yesterday's Independent Spirit Awards in Santa Monica. The slighted character actor picked up the Best Male Lead for his work in Sideways. His co-stars Virginia Madsen and Thomas Hayden Church won for Best Supporting Female and Best Supporting Male respectively. The Fox Searchlight Pictures film also picked up awards for Best Feature, Best Screenplay and Best Director for Alexander Payne. Other big winners of the day were Maria Full of Grace, whose cast and crew were awarded Best First Screenplay and Best Female Lead, and The Motorcycle Diaries, which won for Best Debut Performance and Best Cinematography. Rounding out the winners were Garden State for Best First Feature, Mean Creek for the John Cassavetes Award, The Sea Inside for Best Foreign Feature and Some Kind of Monster for Best Documentary.
