Israel blames Syria for Tel Aviv suicide bombing

Newsroom

Israel blames Syria
Israeli Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz said on Saturday that Syria was to blame for a suicide bombing that killed four Israelis was carried out by a militant from the Damascus-based Islamic Jihad group. Reuters reports, a Beirut-based official from the organization who declined to be named confirmed that Islamic Jihad carried out the suicide bomb attack in the Israeli City of Tel Aviv. "We confirm that we carried out the operation," the official, who declined to be named, told Reuters.

Friday's bombing at a Tel Aviv nightclub marred hopes that had brightened since Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas and Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon agreed to a ceasefire at a Feb. 8 summit.

Although a West Bank cell of the militant group Islamic Jihad claimed the attack, the faction's Gaza-based leadership denied any knowledge and said it remained committed to maintaining calm.
